Jacksonville, FL (September 19, 2016) – The Independent Living Resource Center of Northeast Florida (ILRC) is seeking North Florida area businesses to participate in their job shadowing program during the month of October. Businesses that are interested in participating should contact April Baker at 904-399-8484 or by emailing aprilb@theilrc.org.
The job shadowing initiative gives small and large businesses the opportunity to save money and time by filtering out candidates who aren’t qualified and not serious about working. It requires very little time to host, approximately two to four hours. Questions about day-to-day- duties, educational requirements for positions within the company and job likes and dislikes are typical during the experience.
“Individuals who job shadowed gained a clearer understanding of job expectations and company policies,” said Tyler Morris, Executive Director of the ILRC of Northeast Florida. “We’ve had much success in placing individuals after job shadowing who have gone on to have very successful job experiences.”
An example would be an ILRC consumer who job shadowed a supervisor at Pitney Bowes to learn the duties and functions of a Pre-Sorter. After job shadowing and learning he could perform the duties, he was hired full-time at the company. Pitney Bowes has hired 10 individuals with disabilities from the ILRC.
“The relationship between the ILRC and Pitney Bowes has been extremely positive and significantly improved employee retention,” said Nathan Polete, General Manager of Pitney Bowes.
The ILRC has extensive programs for those with disabilities including assistance with resume writing, job training and work incentive planning and assistance.
